"We appreciate the great work that aid organisations like RESULTS are doing because what we see first hand will have a far greater impact than a presentation at Westminster."

John Barrett, MP for Edinburgh West

"The whole experience has really brought home what people in Kenya lack and that TB is not a priority. Everyone we discuss TB with has had it at the bottom of the list and we have to bring it into the discussion."

Julie Morgan, MP for Cardiff North

Letter to the Guardian
18.09.06

AIDS and TB activists have been warning for years of the dangers of letting the diseases spreading almost unchecked. Now their worst fears are being realised with the emergence of XDR-TB. The funds must be found to eradicate this strain before it takes an unbreakable hold. It's not as though Britain can't afford it - indeed, it we can't afford not to.

RESULTS UK: tackling TB

The challenge of TB is multifaceted and so too is the approach needed to tackle it. RESULTS works with Parliamentarians, Non-Governmental Organisations, the public and the media to increase awareness of TB and cost-effective solutions for controlling the disease. Our four main focus areas are:

  1. Working with decision-makers
  2. Building alliances with NGOs
  3. Involving the public
  4. Engaging the media

Working with decision-makers

RESULTS uses a number of advocacy tools to educate decision-makers. Through one-to-one meetings, briefing sessions, advocacy tours and Parliamentary delegations, a growing number of Parliamentarians are taking an interest in the global TB problem.

Since the ACTION project began, RESULTS UK has led successful parliamentary delegations to India, Kenya, Rwanda and Ukraine giving 15 British Parliamentarians and 2 Members of the European Parliament the opportunity to learn about TB first-hand and become proactively involved in the fight against TB.

As well as organising visits for Parliamentarians to high TB burden countries, RESULTS UK regularly invites TB experts and patient advocates from around the world to educate decision-makers and the media about the impact of TB in their countries. To date, individuals from Bangladesh, India, Kenya, Russia and Zambia have all shared their expertise and personal stories.

A successful outcome of RESULTS UK's work with Parliamentarians is the creation of an All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Global Tuberculosis in the House of Commons. The APPG is co-chaired by three MPs who have all participated in a delegation to a high TB burden country. RESULTS currently provides the Secretariat for the APPG. For more information, visit the APPG on Global TB's website.

Building alliances with NGOs

RESULTS reguarly works in close collaboration with other NGOs in the UK and internationally to increase the political will to fight TB and other diseases of poverty.

Involving the public

Our unique grassroots network plays an important role in RESULTS' work on TB. Each year, a number of our monthly actions focus on TB enabling individuals from across the UK to learn about the issue and be involved in efforts to combat the disease.

Engaging the media

RESULTS works closely with ACTION project partners to engage and inform the national and international media in order to increase knowledge and understanding of TB among the general population. In addition, our grassroots network regularly reaches local and regional media through letters to the editors about TB and related issues. During Parliamentary delegations to high TB burden countries, RESULTS works with the media in-country to raise the profile of the disease and its impact.
